Dufresne’s latest showcase at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra, reshaping perceptions of beauty

Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra celebrates its 25th exhibition at The Gallery with “Ici ou Là” by the acclaimed artist Damien Dufresne, an unconventional photographer famed for his prowess in makeup and advertising. The exhibition is open to the public free of charge until the end of May, from 8 am to 10 pm daily.
"Ici ou Là" unveils Damien’s enigmatic world, diverging from the confines of fashion and marketing. This artist, also recognised as a hairstylist, makeup artist, and artistic director, honed his craft during six years in Shanghai. Speaking about the event, he remarks, "I have no concept or career plan, I don’t calculate, I improvise constantly. I do not seek to provoke, but I don’t forbid myself anything." He continues, "I create images that speak to me and make sense to me." With his remarkable talent, the intricacies of hairstyling and makeup are eloquently portrayed in each photograph of the exhibition, blurring the boundaries between art and life. Viewers are prompted to reassess their perceptions of beauty and authenticity.
The audience comprised numerous designers, art collectors, and arts patrons during opening night of the exhibition. "I thought it was an interesting juxtaposition of colour in relation to the body as a three-dimensional object but presented in a two-dimensional format," commented Designer Don Protasio at the event. "It evokes a certain emotion, and I love how it’s in the realm of fashion but done in a subtle way. You really can’t be quite sure, and that’s something interesting to unpack."
With a rich history in the fashion industry, Damien Dufresne transitioned to photography, exhibiting his work in galleries worldwide, including Paris, Seoul, Milan, New York, Tokyo, and Shanghai. He then relocated to Siem Reap, Cambodia, gaining renown for his studio, Masa Studio, where he resides alongside his team. Masa Studio doubles as a gallery and print studio, adding to Damien’s artistic legacy.
